The name Just Druid came about after a conversation between Gareth and one of his relatives in Singapore, Aqbal. They were talking about the work by Carl Jung and his study of eastern religions, their tradition of inward reflection and self discovery, and Jung’s ideas on individuation. They were also talking about Jung’s observation that the western person is mainly extroverted focusing on the external world, looking for meaning in external objects and external action, while the eastern person is mainly introverted looking for meaning within the Self. Jung’s argument was that the two should come together and both the western and eastern approaches had their strengths and weaknesses.
With that in mind and knowing that Gareth is Welsh (with its Celtic and Druidic history), Aqbal said, it is not “Just Do It” but “Just Druid”. The name struck a chord at many levels because it brought together the two aspects of inward reflection and outer action that Jung talked about. It also brought in the link to nature through the strong link between Druids and their natural environment.
It wasn’t until a while later that Gareth decided to do something based on the Just Druid name and these ideals, i.e. put something into action. The results so far are the Just Druid t-shirts and their symbolism, and a place for discussion and learning.
