Talk at the North East London NHS innovation conference

Gareth Loudon gave a talk at the North East London NHS Foundation Trust annual conference on the 9th February. The conference focused on driving forward the organisation’s innovation and transformation programme. and was attended by over 200 staff including clinicians, support workers and service managers.

Innovation Workshop at 20 Twenty Leadership Programme

Gareth Loudon recently ran a half-day innovation workshop for business leaders in South Wales as part of the 20 Twenty Leadership Programme run by the Cardiff School of Management at Cardiff Metropolitan University (formerly UWIC). Gareth presented the latest research findings on the relationship between movement, play and creativity. The workshop also showed how to establish a simple innovation process inside a business through the use of case studies and live exercises.

Conference Poster on Divergent Thinking

We recently presented our conference poster entitled ‘Correlation between Coherent Heart Rate Variability and Divergent Thinking’ at the Creativity and Cognition 2011 Conference in Atlanta, Georgia from 2nd-6th November. ABSTRACT: In this paper, a new quantitative method is proposed for measuring the unconscious mind in the incubation stage of the creative process. The method uses Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as a measure of the emotional and mental state of the participants. The creative process is measured quantitatively by the degree of divergent thinking shown by participants during a study of idea generation. The aim of the study is to see if there is a correlation between coherent HRV and divergent thinking.

Conference Poster on Play, Prototyping and Creativity

We recently presented our conference poster entitled ‘The Relationship Between Play, Prototyping and Creativity’ at DESIRE ’11, the Second International Conference on Creativity and Innovation in Design, held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, on 19-21 October 2011.

ABSTRACT
Prototyping has been used extensively in new product development to help designers try out and test new ideas. However due to commercial time pressures the role of prototyping is often limited. This study builds on existing research into the benefits and limitations of prototyping and starts to explore whether play supports creativity and divergent thinking to help improve the design and development of new products. The paper concludes by proposing key issues for further testing on whether play supports divergent thinking and creative problem solving; whether the type of play is a factor; and whether the play needs to be directly related to the task at hand.
